Seismographic Sketching Device
pigment, matte board, salvaged wood, wool, rope, nail, hardware
dimensions of Device: 11(h) x 22(w) x 10(d)”
This piece is an interactive sculpture that sketches the particular motion of the user’s gait as s/he walks, creating a subjective record or abstract map as a translation of their experience exploring the impoverished neighborhood and neglected park surrounding the exhibition. The Seismographic Sketching Device is worn with an adjustable strap around the back of the neck and held in place against the waist by handles in the front. One hand is placed over the top brace, and a sharpened nail is dropped on a string between the fingers. A matte board coated with pigment is placed into the flat slot below the nail. The nail sketches its path as the user moves.
